There’s something uniquely satisfying about leaving a spa feeling like you’ve hit the reset button. A professional body scrub does more than leave your skin incredibly smooth—it becomes a wellness ritual when it’s paired with the heat of a sauna, steam room, or traditional hammam.
While researching and exploring Metro Vancouver’s spa scene over the past few years, I discovered that there are surprisingly few places offering this combination. Those that do each take a different approach, drawing inspiration from wellness traditions around the world. Depending on where you go, your experience might include a Moroccan hammam with black soap and a kessa glove, a Turkish-inspired foam ritual, a Persian bath, a modern luxury hammam, or an authentic Korean body scrub.
In this guide, I’ve rounded up five of the best hammam and body scrub experiences in Metro Vancouver. Every place featured combines heat therapy—whether that’s a sauna, steam room, or hammam—with a professional exfoliation treatment. While most of the experiences are inspired by Moroccan, Turkish, or Persian bathing traditions, I’ve also included one Korean body scrub because it’s simply too good to leave off the list.
Whether you’re planning your first hammam, searching for the smoothest skin you’ve ever had, or looking for a unique wellness experience beyond the typical spa day, this guide will help you choose the experience that’s right for you.
What is a Hammam?
A hammam is a traditional bathing ritual that originated in the Middle East and North Africa. Unlike a regular steam room, a hammam combines heat, cleansing, and exfoliation into a complete wellness experience. Depending on the tradition, treatments may include black soap, a kessa glove, a foam massage, clay masks, or aromatic oils.
Today, Metro Vancouver offers several unique interpretations of the hammam—from authentic Moroccan rituals to Turkish-inspired thermal spas and modern luxury experiences.
Miraj Hammam Spa (Vancouver)
If you’re looking for the most authentic Moroccan hammam experience in Metro Vancouver, Miraj Hammam Spa is the place to start. Open since 2000, it was Canada’s first dedicated hammam and has introduced thousands of guests to the centuries-old traditions of Moroccan bathing and purification.
Unlike a typical steam room, a hammam is designed as a ritual rather than simply a place to relax. Your experience begins in a warm, humid steam chamber, where the heat softens the skin and prepares it for exfoliation. The signature Hammam & Gommage treatment includes traditional Moroccan black soap followed by a full-body exfoliation using a kessa glove, removing dead skin and leaving your skin incredibly soft and refreshed.
One feature that sets Miraj apart is its private hammam rooms. Rather than sharing a communal bathing space, you experience the ritual individually or with your chosen companion, creating a quiet and intimate atmosphere. Couples, friends, and family members can even book a shared hammam experience before enjoying individual massages and relaxing together in the Sultana Lounge with Moroccan mint tea and sweet treats.
The Hammam & Gommage can be booked as a standalone treatment, or combined with a Rhassoul mud mask or a 60- or 90-minute massage for a longer spa experience.
I visited Miraj for my birthday and loved how different it felt from any other spa experience in Metro Vancouver. The warm marble hammam, aromatic black soap, and traditional exfoliation created a ritual that was both deeply relaxing and culturally immersive. It’s the closest experience I’ve found locally to the traditional Moroccan hammams I’ve always wanted to experience.

Art of Sauna (Burnaby)
If you enjoy spending several hours at a thermal spa rather than booking a single treatment, Art of Sauna offers one of the most complete wellness experiences in Metro Vancouver. Inspired by Turkish bathing traditions and European sauna culture, it’s a place where the hammam treatment becomes part of a larger thermal circuit.
Unlike Miraj Hammam Spa, where the focus is on a private Moroccan ritual, Art of Sauna is a communal thermal spa. Your Hammam Retreat includes two hours of access to the saunas and steam rooms before or after your treatment, giving you plenty of time to alternate between heat, cooling down, and relaxation before continuing your day.
The Hammam Retreat begins with a full-body exfoliation using traditional abrasive mitts to remove dead skin. Next comes one of the highlights of the experience: a rich olive oil soap foam wash that covers your body in a cloud of warm, silky foam while gently cleansing and moisturizing the skin. The treatment finishes with a shampoo and conditioning treatment using Davines hair products, leaving you feeling refreshed from head to toe.
Guests can choose between a Light Scrub for a gentler exfoliation or a Deep Scrub for a more vigorous treatment. If you have sensitive skin or have never experienced a traditional body scrub before, the Light Scrub is a great introduction. If you’re looking for the satisfying feeling of deep exfoliation, the Deep Scrub delivers a more intensive experience.
For me, the combination of multiple saunas, steam rooms, and the hammam treatment is what makes Art of Sauna special. Rather than arriving for a treatment and leaving immediately afterward, you can slow down, enjoy the thermal circuit, and turn your visit into a half-day wellness experience.

Afrina Beauty, Spa & Wellness Club (North Vancouver)
If you’re interested in exploring different bathing traditions from around the world, Afrina Beauty, Spa & Wellness Club offers one of the most diverse selections in Metro Vancouver. Unlike most spas that focus on a single hammam experience, Afrina offers Moroccan, Persian, and Turkish bath rituals, each inspired by its own cultural traditions and techniques.
The Traditional Moroccan Bath begins with warm steam and cleansing using Moroccan black soap infused with eucalyptus. A vigorous body scrub follows before a nourishing Rhassoul clay mask blended with rose water and Moroccan herbs is applied to hydrate and soften the skin.
For those looking for a more indulgent experience, the Oriental Delight Ritual expands on the traditional Moroccan bath by adding a facial exfoliation and brightening mask, a nourishing hair treatment, and a 20-minute full-body massage, creating a complete head-to-toe wellness ritual.
Afrina also offers a Traditional Persian Bath, which uses Persian herbs and a kisseh exfoliating mitt to gently remove dead skin while stimulating circulation, as well as a Traditional Turkish Bath featuring a deep soap cleanse, body exfoliation, and the signature Turkish foam massage.
One feature that makes Afrina unique is the ability to experience three distinct bathing traditions at the same spa. Guests can also add an infrared sauna session before or after their treatment to extend their wellness experience.
Although I haven’t visited Afrina yet, it stands out as one of the few places in Metro Vancouver offering authentic Moroccan, Persian, and Turkish-inspired bath rituals under one roof, making it a destination I’d love to experience in the future.

Spa Soleá (Fairmont Hotel Vancouver)
Located inside the historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Spa Soleá brings a contemporary interpretation of the traditional hammam experience to downtown Vancouver. Rather than recreating a historic bathhouse, it blends centuries-old cleansing rituals with modern luxury spa treatments, creating a relaxing experience that’s ideal for a special occasion or an indulgent wellness day.
The Awakening Hammam Ritual begins with time in the steam room to warm the body and prepare the skin for exfoliation. Relaxing on a heated marble table, you’ll receive a full-body scrub followed by a traditional cleansing wash and a nourishing body balm application that leaves the skin soft, hydrated, and refreshed.
For those looking for a more complete spa journey, the Ultimate Hammam Experience builds on the signature ritual by adding a customized full-body massage and a personalized facial, creating a two-and-a-half-hour treatment designed to restore both body and mind.
One of the highlights of Spa Soleá is that every hammam treatment includes up to two hours of access to the spa’s wellness facilities before or after your appointment. Guests can enjoy the infrared saunas, eucalyptus steam rooms, relaxation lounge, herbal tea, and the spa’s signature Deep Rest Loungers, making it easy to extend the experience beyond the treatment itself.
Although I haven’t visited Spa Soleá yet, it stands out as one of the few places in Metro Vancouver offering a dedicated hammam ritual. If you’re looking for a luxurious spa experience inspired by traditional bathing practices rather than a historic Moroccan or Turkish bathhouse, Spa Soleá is well worth considering.

Bonus: Experience an Authentic Korean Body Scrub
JJ Family Spa (Coquitlam)
Although JJ Family Spa isn’t a hammam, I couldn’t finish this guide without including it. If your goal is the deepest, smoothest body exfoliation you’ll find in Metro Vancouver, an authentic Korean body scrub deserves a place on your wellness bucket list.
JJ Family Spa is Metro Vancouver’s premier Korean-style bathhouse (jjimjilbang), offering a traditional wellness experience centered around heat, hydrotherapy, and relaxation. The spa features gender-separated wet areas with hot and cold baths, steam rooms, and dry saunas, while the shared co-ed area includes specialty healing rooms such as the Charcoal Room, Yellow Earth Room with infrared heat, and an Ice Room for cooling down between heat sessions.
Unlike a Moroccan or Turkish hammam, a Korean body scrub begins with 30 minutes of preparation. Before your appointment, you’ll spend time soaking in the hot tubs or relaxing in the steam room to soften your skin. This step is essential—the better your skin is prepared, the more effective and comfortable the exfoliation will be.
The scrub itself is vigorous and incredibly satisfying. Using textured exfoliating mitts, the therapist removes layers of dead skin, leaving your entire body feeling exceptionally smooth. My favorite treatment is Scrub A, which includes the body scrub, a 25-minute oil massage, a cucumber facial mask, and a shampoo. It’s the package I book about every three months, and I always leave feeling completely refreshed.
What makes JJ Family Spa unique is that your treatment is part of a full Korean spa experience. Before and after your scrub, you can continue enjoying the hot and cold baths, saunas, and healing rooms, making it easy to spend several relaxing hours at the spa.

Final Thoughts
One of the things I love most about exploring spas is discovering how different cultures have developed their own bathing traditions. While every experience in this guide combines heat and exfoliation, no two are quite the same.
If you’re looking for the most authentic Moroccan hammam, Miraj Hammam Spa is hard to beat. If spending several hours moving between saunas and steam rooms sounds like your perfect wellness day, Art of Sauna offers the most complete thermal circuit. Afrina brings together three cultural traditions under one roof, while Spa Soleá offers a luxurious modern interpretation inside one of Vancouver’s most iconic hotels. And if you’re ready for the deepest exfoliation you’ve ever experienced, don’t skip the Korean body scrub at JJ Family Spa.
I’ve personally visited Miraj Hammam Spa, Art of Sauna, and JJ Family Spa, and I’ll continue updating this guide as I experience more of Metro Vancouver’s wellness destinations.
If you’ve discovered another sauna, hammam, or body scrub experience in Metro Vancouver that deserves a place on this list, I’d love to hear about it. Send me a message on Instagram—I’m always looking for my next wellness adventure.
